NAIROBI, August 19, 2026 — The United Alternative Government has raised alarm over rising cases of political violence and intimidation in the country, warning that the trend could undermine national cohesion and democratic gains ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The opposition coalition, speaking during a joint press briefing in Nairobi, condemned recent attacks targeting opposition leaders, journalists and ordinary citizens in various parts of the country, describing the incidents as a worrying pattern of political intolerance.
Reading the joint statement on behalf of the coalition,People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua called for urgent action to protect the rule of law and preserve the democratic space ahead of the elections.
“We are witnessing a worrying trend of political intolerance that directly undermines the rule of law,” Karua said, calling for prompt, independent and transparent investigations into all reported incidents and for those responsible to be held accountable.
She said political differences should be resolved through democratic processes rather than intimidation or violence, urging political actors to respect the rights of citizens as the country prepares for the 2027 polls.
“The 2027 General Election must be decided through ideas, policies, ballots, and the sovereign will of the people, not through violence, intimidation, or fear.” she said.
Karua further appealed to Kenyans, religious leaders, civil society organisations, the media and the international community to remain vigilant against attempts to suppress democratic freedoms and silence alternative voices.
She urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies and other constitutional institutions to uphold their mandates impartially and ensure state institutions are not used to target political opponents.
“State institutions must serve all Kenyans equally and resist being used as tools for political persecution.” she said.
The coalition said continued intimidation and attacks could narrow the democratic space and undermine public confidence in the electoral process if left unchecked.
As part of efforts to strengthen electoral preparedness, the leaders announced plans to establish the People’s Forum for Electoral Preparedness, bringing together civil society organisations, religious groups, the media and other stakeholders to promote electoral integrity and democratic accountability.
The proposed forum will also promote civic education, monitor compliance with electoral laws and provide a platform for citizens to raise concerns over issues affecting the electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The United Alternative Government reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement and urged Kenyans to reject violence, intimidation and division, stressing that the ballot must remain the legitimate means through which citizens exercise their democratic choice.
