NAIROBI, September 2, 2026 — Religious leaders and other national stakeholders have called for inclusive dialogue, accountability and practical solutions to challenges that could affect Kenya’s democratic and electoral processes ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The call was made during the National Stakeholders’ Convention on “Democratic, Credible and Peaceful 2027 Elections”, being held from September 2 to 3 at Ufungamano House, Nairobi.
The two-day convention brings together key actors in the democratic and electoral space to assess Kenya’s preparedness for the elections and promote collective responsibility towards a peaceful and credible electoral process.
The convention is convened under the Kenya Religious Leaders Forum by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) and National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
The forum seeks to assess the readiness of constitutional bodies with electoral and security mandates, identify key risks that could undermine democratic, credible and peaceful elections and develop appropriate mitigation measures.
Speaking during the convention, Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana, who represented the IEBC Chairperson, outlined the Commission’s state of preparedness and reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible, transparent and peaceful 2027 General Election.
“Charting the country’s peaceful path to 2027 requires the religious community and all stakeholders to play their respective roles,” Dr. Mukhwana said, calling for continued engagement in preparations for the elections.
He also called on stakeholders to hold the Commission accountable and embrace dialogue as a means of addressing challenges that could affect the electoral process.
“Dialogue is essential in ensuring that stakeholders collectively contribute to a peaceful electoral process,” Dr. Mukhwana said.

He said the Council would continue engaging fellow religious institutions and other national stakeholders to promote peaceful democratic participation and credible electoral processes.
“SUPKEM remains committed to supporting efforts that promote democratic, credible and peaceful elections in Kenya,” Sheikh Abdullahi Salat said.
The convention also provides a platform for stakeholders to formulate strategies, actions and commitments aimed at safeguarding the integrity of democratic outcomes before, during and after the 2027 electoral cycle.
The discussions come at a critical period as Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, with participants stressing the importance of continued consultations, constructive engagement and respect for democratic institutions.
Participants are expected to develop practical interventions to address emerging risks and strengthen confidence in the electoral process, while encouraging peaceful political engagement throughout the electoral cycle.
The convention is expected to strengthen collaboration among religious institutions, constitutional bodies, civil society and other stakeholders in promoting democratic, credible and peaceful elections.
