Government, Tata Chemicals Magadi Establish Committee to Resolve Compliance Issues

NAIROBI, September 8, 2026 — The Government and Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited have agreed to establish a high-level technical committee to address outstanding compliance concerns following the suspension of operations at the company.

Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs Hassan Ali Joho said the committee will facilitate a comprehensive and timely resolution of the matters raised by the Ministry during a meeting with the company’s executives.

Speaking after the meeting, Joho said the committee will be jointly led by the Principal Secretary for Mining on behalf of the Ministry and the Chief Executive Officer of Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited on behalf of the company.

“To facilitate a comprehensive and timely resolution of the outstanding matters, we agreed to establish a high-level technical committee. The committee will be led by the Principal Secretary for Mining on behalf of the Ministry and the Chief Executive Officer of Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited on behalf of the Company,” Joho said.

The Cabinet Secretary said the committee will undertake a detailed technical review of the outstanding and unresolved compliance matters and prepare a report for submission to his office for consideration and further direction.

The review will focus on five unresolved areas.These include mineral beneficiation and in-country value addition, outstanding community benefits and royalty obligations, unresolved land matters, opening up the area for multiple mineral extraction, and outstanding matters with the Kajiado County Government.

Joho said the engagement was aimed at finding a comprehensive solution to the concerns raised by the Ministry.

He said the Government remains committed to constructive engagement with investors while ensuring that Kenya’s laws, regulations and the interests of its people are upheld.

Joho said resolving the concerns would contribute to a sustainable framework for responsible mining and value addition.

“The objective is not only to resolve the outstanding compliance matters but also to establish a sustainable framework that promotes responsible mining, value addition, community development and mutually beneficial partnerships,” he said.

The formation of the technical committee follows the suspension of operations at Tata Chemicals Magadi Limited, which prompted the Ministry to raise compliance concerns.

The committee will provide a platform to examine the issues, undertake the technical review and present its findings to the Cabinet Secretary.The Principal Secretary and Chief Executive Officer will lead the review on behalf of their institutions.

The Government said the approach is intended to resolve the matters while promoting responsible mining, value addition and community development.

Joho said the Government would continue engaging investors constructively as it seeks to ensure that mining activities comply with the country’s legal and regulatory requirements and contribute to national and community interests.

The initiative is expected to strengthen engagement between the Government and the company while ensuring compliance and supporting community interests in mineral development within the affected area.
