NAIROBI, September 1, 2026 — Kenya has launched a national call for artificial intelligence (AI) use cases as the country seeks practical technology solutions capable of addressing development, public service, environmental, research and economic challenges.
The initiative is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Kenya, the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE) and the Technopolis Development Authority through the Artificial Intelligence Accelerator Programme.
Speaking on the initiative, Technopolis Development Authority Chief Executive Officer John Paul Okwiri said the programme would create opportunities for Kenyan innovators, researchers and startups to develop AI solutions that respond to real-world challenges.
“The future will belong to countries that do not just consume AI but build it. Through this programme, the Technopolis Development Authority is creating pathways for Kenyan innovators, researchers and startups to develop AI solutions that address real-world challenges, create economic value and improve lives.” Paul said.
Okwiri said the Authority would provide infrastructure, partnerships and an innovation ecosystem to support the development of locally relevant AI solutions and strengthen Kenya’s position as a leading technology and innovation destination in Africa.
“Our role is to provide the infrastructure, partnerships and innovation ecosystem that will help position Kenya as Africa’s leading destination for technology and innovation.”Paul said.
The Open Call for AI Use Cases targets public institutions, universities and research institutions, startups and innovators, who are invited to submit challenges, concepts and existing AI-enabled solutions at different stages of development.
The submitted use cases will undergo structured assessment to determine the suitability of AI, potential impact, data and technical readiness, implementation requirements, and relevant safety and governance considerations.
Depending on their needs and readiness, selected applicants may receive support through AI computing at the Technopolis Development Authority, data preparation, AI solution development and technical assistance, talent and capacity development, Responsible AI and assurance, as well as research and technology partnerships.
Eligible startups may also be connected to investors, potential buyers, industry partners and market opportunities to facilitate the development and uptake of promising solutions.
The initiative comes as AI continues to reshape economies, public services and innovation globally, with Kenya seeking to strengthen the foundations needed to apply the technology in safe, responsible and secure ways.
The programme is expected to build a pipeline of accountable and locally relevant AI solutions that can strengthen public service delivery, accelerate research and innovation, support environmentally sustainable growth and contribute to the country’s wider social, environmental and economic development.
