NAIROBI, June 29, 2026 — Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has expanded its renewable energy development pipeline from 1,500 megawatts (MW) to 5,500MW as it unveiled its inaugural Sustainability Report, reinforcing its commitment to Kenya’s clean energy transition and long-term sustainable development.
The report, launched at Karura Forest in Nairobi, outlines the Company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance for the 2024/25 financial year while setting out an ambitious roadmap that includes geothermal expansion, hydropower, nuclear energy and battery energy storage.
Speaking during the launch, Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change Dr. Eng. Festus Ng’eno said KenGen’s sustainability agenda demonstrates the type of corporate leadership needed to advance Kenya’s climate commitments.
“Kenya’s transition to a low-carbon economy requires institutions that continuously adapt to emerging opportunities while remaining accountable for their environmental and social impact. KenGen’s Sustainability Report, coupled with its expanded renewable energy ambitions, demonstrates the kind of corporate leadership needed to deliver our national climate and development goals,” said Ng’eno.
He said sustainability reporting has become an essential component of good governance and urged more public and private institutions to embrace it as a tool for accountability and resilience.
“Sustainability reporting is becoming an essential element of good governance and sound business management. It enables organisations to understand their impacts, manage emerging risks, build stakeholder confidence and demonstrate accountability,” he added.
KenGen Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Peter Njenga said the report marks a defining milestone in the Company’s 72-year history and reflects its commitment to transparency and responsible business.
“Our inaugural Sustainability Report is more than a record of our ESG performance. It reflects a company responding decisively to a changing energy landscape. We have strategically recalibrated our long-term growth trajectory from 1,500MW to a 5,500MW renewable energy development pipeline, reaffirming our commitment to powering Kenya’s sustainable economic transformation,” said Njenga.
He said the expanded growth strategy will support Kenya’s industrialisation agenda while creating employment opportunities and strengthening regional energy security.
“These ambitions are not about megawatts or infrastructure alone. They are about creating jobs, enabling industries, strengthening communities, protecting ecosystems and building a future where economic prosperity and environmental responsibility are partners,” he added.
In remarks delivered on behalf of Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira by Engineer Isaac Kiva, the Government said KenGen had developed an investment ecosystem capable of supporting green industrialisation.
“This is a practical demonstration of how energy can move beyond powering homes to powering factories, creating jobs, attracting investment and strengthening Kenya’s manufacturing base,” said Wachira.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting investments in renewable energy through policy and strategic partnerships.
“Our State corporations will continue delivering strategic infrastructure, the private sector will continue driving innovation and investment, while our development partners remain valued partners in this journey,” he said.
According to the Sustainability Report, renewable energy accounted for 94.4 per cent of KenGen’s electricity dispatch during the 2024/25 financial year, while the Company generated 6.9 million carbon credits and maintained one of Africa’s lowest carbon intensity levels at 0.06089 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per megawatt-hour.
The report further shows that KenGen raised 887,220 tree seedlings, restored 850 hectares of degraded land, supported 237 students through scholarships, provided clean water to more than 42,300 households and awarded 69 per cent of procurement opportunities valued at Sh10.01 billion to local suppliers.
Prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative Standards, the UN Global Compact principles and the Nairobi Securities Exchange ESG Disclosure Guidelines, the report establishes a framework for annual sustainability reporting while reinforcing KenGen’s commitment to transparency, responsible business practices and long-term value creation.
