National Treasury, CAK Convene Conference to Advance Fair Markets and Consumer Welfare

NAIROBI, June 4 — The National Treasury has reaffirmed its commitment to market deregulation, highlighting that eliminating restrictive trade practices could boost Kenya’s real GDP by 4.9 percent and formal employment by 2.6 percent by 2035. Speaking at the Research Conference on Competition and Consumer Welfare, National Treasury Principal Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo pledged continued financial and policy backing for the Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK). The government has invested over Sh8 billion in the regulator since 2011 to curb unfair trade practices, dismantle public procurement bid-rigging schemes, and expand market oversight into emerging digital economies and artificial intelligence.
