NAIROBI, Kenya — Prominent commercial pilot and grassroots mobiliser Faith Nguthu, popularly known as “Mama Tutam,” has officially declared her candidacy for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election, unveiling a vision centred on women’s leadership, youth empowerment, education and economic opportunity.

The announcement was made during her political launch event at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), drawing thousands of supporters, community leaders and women’s groups from across Nairobi County.

Speaking during the launch, Nguthu said her decision to seek office was inspired by a desire to help transform the lives of ordinary Kenyans through leadership that delivers jobs, education and opportunities.

“I have a dream for our children, our mothers, our fathers, our brothers and sisters. A dream of turning opportunities into reality through jobs, education and leadership. We must create a society where young people become what they aspire to be, not merely what circumstances force them to become,” Nguthu said.

She said many young people continue to face unemployment, frustration and limited opportunities despite possessing the talent and potential to succeed.

According to Nguthu, leadership should focus on creating an environment where young people can pursue their ambitions and build meaningful futures rather than struggling simply to survive.

“I want to see our sons and daughters becoming what they dream of becoming. I want them to pursue their ambitions with hope and dignity, not become victims of hopelessness, frustration and oppression,” she said.

Nguthu also used the platform to advocate for greater participation of women in elective politics, arguing that women should be encouraged to compete for leadership positions and play a greater role in decision-making.

“I want to see young women competing for political seats, not simply competing for political nominations. Women must have a place at the decision-making table because their voices matter in shaping the future of our communities,” Nguthu said.

She described women as the backbone of families and communities, saying they play a central role in raising children, supporting households and sustaining communities through difficult times.

“It is women who ensure children go to school, who hold families together and who keep communities moving forward. Their voices and experiences must be reflected in leadership,” she said.

Nguthu further argued that increasing women’s representation in leadership would strengthen investments in healthcare, education, clean water and child welfare.

“When women are in leadership, we see greater focus on healthcare, education, clean water and the safety of our children. Not because others do not care, but because women live these realities every day and understand their impact on families,” she said.

She dismissed suggestions that politics is unsuitable for women, saying female leaders possess the resilience, discipline and determination needed to transform society.

“If politics is dirty, then it needs the cleaning hand of a mother. If politics is hard, then it needs the resilience of a woman,” Nguthu said.

The commercial pilot said her journey in community empowerment had convinced her that sustainable development requires both grassroots action and effective representation in public office.

“For years, I have flown high in my career, but my heart has always remained firmly anchored on the ground with my people. Every shilling I have spent from my salary has been a seed planted for our shared future,” she said.

Her entry into the race is expected to intensify competition for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat ahead of the 2027 General Election, with political observers pointing to her growing grassroots network and strong support among women and youth as key strengths.

The launch event marked the beginning of a campaign that is likely to focus heavily on economic empowerment, education, women’s leadership and expanding opportunities for young people across Nairobi County.
